Web development in Scotland – we use DNN

The web development package we use is the unlikely named DotNetNuke – DNN. It’s written in .Net and as we are very experienced in Microsoft .Net development it made good sense. We have extended it significantly to add in lots and lots of extra functionality and capability. Although a Microsoft based CMS it’s an open source package – BSD. That makes it a great platform to use are there are lots of experts out there.

DNN intranet development

One of the pleasures of using DotNetNuke is that it makes the administration of an intranet system so straightforward. We’ve extended the DotNetNuke DNN Content Management Significantly – but that has been possible because much of what DNN provides allows you to do a lot of the tedious stuff quicky.

Privileges are easily set up and administered leaving our web development team to get on with the main task of intranet development. Check out DNN for yourselves – very cool (though to be fair a bit hard at first). DNN intranet development has allowed us to deploy significant projects quickly – worth a look if you are a .net organisation and need something that works well.

DotNetNuke or Joomla – a surprising answer

We had a pretty sensible discussion with a client recently – they had been deliberating on whether Joomla or DotNetNuke was the correct CMS platform for them. Having a team of DNN Developers and having been involved in DotNetNuke development for a good long time I think the client was surprised with the answer we gave….

“We’re DNN developers for the simple reason that out background is on Microsoft .Net platforms so for us we’d be daft not to. “

With any web development the technology is important but so are the people – you can make most technology do most things and when it comes to DNN our DNN developers can really make it fly. As for Joomla I’m sure its great – we simply haven’t gotten around to using it any anger yet. Maybe that day will come – but for now DNN delivers great results for us and our clients.

DotNetNuke hosting – a moment of clarity

It seems a long time ago now but when we started messing around with DNN (Dot Net Nuke) we used a hosted system to get up to speed. I have to say that it was an unmitigated disaster!

At first when things went wrong we (thats code for me) couldn’t figure out if it was a DNN problem, a third party host problem – or my stupidity. As it turned out (and with hindsight) it was a combination of hosting, DNN and yip – my stupidity.

We were using an out of date DNN, a DNN hosting company that really didn’t care and we (well me) also had a lack of expertise with the platform.

Today however things are somewhat different – perseverance, hard work and a team of developers who are much clever than me sees us now as a seriously skilled bunch of DotNetNuke module developers. That hard work has allowed us to develop online systems faster and dare I saw cheaper than conventional website developers.

The moment of clarity came when we started hosting the DNN system ourselves – suddenly lots of unknowns went away. In Scotland I reckon we are the premier dotnetnuke development team. An idle boast? Well maybe. But we have an enviable track record – so we’ll see if that statement is proven wrong any time soon.
